For any activity outdoors, whether it's drumming or paddling on a Dragon Boat like me or just strolling through the city - it's important to take care of your skin before and after sun exposure. Did you know that exposure to the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and rapid aging? To stay young and beautiful, read on below!
The Harmful Effects of Sun Exposure
There's a high correlation between sun exposure and tanning beds to skin cancer. More than 90% of skin cancer is caused by sun exposure! The following characteristics of a person are also at a higher risk for sunburn, skin damage, and skin cancer:
- Blond or red hair
- Blue or green eyes
- Fair skin (Hello, that's me!)
Sunscreen and Aloe Vera Gel
Fear not, that's where the importance of sunscreen and Aloe Vera Gel comes in. My current must-have sunscreen is by 100% Pure - a wonderful brand that is cruelty-free and natural with a focus on healthy skin care.
Sunburns are also no joke. They are painful, hot-to-touch, and radiate pain in areas affected. For fair skin people like me, it's easier for us to get sunburned than others since we lack melanin in our skin. In the photo above, I am completely sunburned from ears to arms after the Dragon Boat festival this past weekend. My one mistake was not reapplying sunscreen after 3 hours in the sun. I was in the sun for a total of 12 hours on Saturday so there was no way to avoid being sunburned - I'll do better next time.
If you do get sunburned, apply lots of Aloe Vera Gel to the affected area and consistently several times a day until you're no longer pink or red. Always apply sunscreen at least one hour before you head outside and reapply a few hours in-between. Make sure the sunscreen you're using is at least SPF 15 or it won't be as effective and you'll risk getting sunburned.
The other product I love is the 100% Pure cucumber juice moisturizer for my face in place of Aloe Vera Gel sometimes. Extremely soothing and hydrating without stickiness like some moisturizers have. It's quenched my dry and sensitive skin and perfect for hot and humid days when you want a light moisturizer instead. I switch between this moisturizer and the aloe vera gel at night during the summer months since it's too hot for my skin to use regular moisturizers. If you're interested in buying the sunscreen and cucumber moisturizer that I mentioned above, you can get it in a discounted set here.
